Abstract
The references to the civilisations of Antiquity - Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Arabic, Berber... - constitute a patrimony common to the people of Europe and the Mediterranean. If it is a equally commonplace to recall that the cross-histories have been the subject of numerous studies, it has been less frequently pointed out that the reference to Antiquity, far from being a refuge or a passeist reflex, has most of the time been drawn closer, since the fifteenth century, to the attempts made to understand the most acute problems of the present. From examples borrowed from the Ancients (Thucydides, Plato), themselves often grappling with their past, and the Moderns (Droysen, Mommsen, Fustel de Coulanges, Clémenceau, Lévi Strauss...) a typology of analogical resorts to Antiquity has been sketched ; the latter never appears as a mere simplification between past and present. These elements of reflexion can contribute to a compared study of the future and the reception of Antiquity within a larger history of the cultures of the Mediterranean area.
